60 cats and kittens rehomed

Our first adoption was Goose who was surrendered to us last year and went to an amazing family and his forever home in May 2021.

The latest on how Goose has settled in just over a year later:

"Goose is our little wild child bundle of love!"

He loves being the centre of attention, plays, snuggles and sits on their shoulder for bathroom and kitchen activities :-)

Since then over 60 cats and kittens, surrendered to us or rescued off the streets, have found new homes.

Most have been kittens and we always try to trap the Mums with them. Sometimes they have been dumped by people and some are abandoned by the mother cat. They have turned up under houses, in backyards and on properties and kind Yass Valley residents have cared enough to feed and/or help trap them.

Bandit and Boat

One of the kittens born in our care, has gone on to a life of fame and fortune. Bandit travels around Canberra and has quite a following on Instagram and Tik Tok. She has the best outfits, loves the markets and makes lots of friends.

Unfortunately there were cats and kittens that we couldn't take when we were full. In many cases we worked with other rescues to take them on but some we couldn't help at all. In these cases we advise residents to try other rescues or take them to the RSPCA in the ACT. We desperately need more foster carers for cats and kittens. The month or 2 they are in foster care they get worm and flea treatment, good food, a warm bed and importantly socialisation, desexing, vaccinations and microchipping.

Luckily most of the cats and kittens we have taken in so far have been fairly healthy, although most are undernourished. Some have cat flu which has been relatively easy to treat with good quality food, home care and the occassional vet visit. We unfortunately lost one very small kitten with feline herpes virus that impacted on his eyes and he was, sadly, euthanased at the vet.

We were able to help several families rehome loved pets due to circumstances beyond their control. In some cases these cats and kittens had already been desexed, vaccinated and/or microchipped. Those that weren't all visited the vet before they went to their forever homes.

We know the costs of owning a cat or kitten are high, even the basics of desexing, vaccinating, microchipping can be difficult for many pet owners. The Yass Valley Council ran a great program this year to fund pensioners vet costs for desexing. We hope to work closely with the council in the future to support residents in desexing and registering their cats.

Thanks to:

  • All of the amazing donors and those who have bought calendars and other fundraising items from us - without you we couldn't do this work.

  • Foster carers; Allie (also our branding guru), Lindsay, Nicole, Tanya, Nicki and their families - thank you so much!!

  • Everyone who has fed, reported, helped trap and brought cats and kittens to us - thank you for caring. These cats may have died and if not, would certainly have bred and killed a lot of wildlife.

Each cat or kitten taken off the street has such a huge impact!
